My Story
Taribu Shakur was directly impacted by the incarceration system for over 45 years, including a final term of 36 years. By virtue of these lived experiences, he has become a Credible Messenger, Theologian-Scholar, Change Agent, and Organizer - committed to inspiring healing and expanding the consciousness of those who feel lost in cycles of despair.
He believes it is imperative to activate and elevate restorative principles and help usher in a more humane approach to establishing justice for all.
Before he ever chose the streets,
the streets chose him.
From Crip to Muslim: Never Been a Child is the true-life account of a New Afrikan man denied childhood and forced into manhood by violence, state terror, and abandonment. From the streets of 1970s South Central Los Angeles to a life sentence inside California's most notorious prison camps — this is the story of what survival really costs, and what it takes to reckon with it.
Written with unpolished honesty and revolutionary clarity, this book stands in the tradition of prison literature and Black radical autobiography.
